Luis Ricardo Serralheiro
Luiz Ricardo Serralheiro began his tuba studies at the Municipal School of Music in São Paulo under Professor Dráuzio Chagas. Serralheiro obtained a degree in tuba performance from the Mozarteum University of São Paulo, and studied with professors Roger Bobo and Anne Jelle Visser in Florence, Italy.
He has held important positions as principal tuba player in numerous São Paulo ensembles such as the Cultura Symphony Orchestra, the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, the São Paulo State Wind Symphony Orchestra and the São Bernardo Philharmonic Orchestra. Serralheiro has also appeared with the São Paulo University Orchestra, the Bachianna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Camerata Aberta, among others. As a teacher, Serralheiro is considered one of Brazil’s most active tuba instructors. He teaches at the Municipal School of Music of São Paulo, the São Paulo State School of Music, the Mozarteum University of São Paulo, the NEOJIBA Project Tuba Academy in Salvador (Bahia) and the Baccarelli Institute. He is also constantly invited to teach at festivals, masterclasses, symposia, conferences and musical gatherings.
Serralheiro is an active musician in the Brazilian recording industry, and has taken part in recordings of the Villa Lobos and Prokofiev symphonies in their entirety with the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, as well as many other critically acclaimed recording projects. He has performed on the most important stages in Europe, the USA and South America. Currently, Serralheiro is principal tuba of the São Paulo Opera Orchestra, where he is developing intense research into orchestral and operatic repertoire for the tuba. An advocate of the development and advancement of the tuba, he is also a regular soloist with chamber and symphonic groups. Serralheiro is a Buffet Crampon and Engelmann Mouthpieces artist.
